Genetic disorders in children: what parents should know

A genetic disorder is caused by a change in a child's chromosomes or genes. It is present from the very start of life and usually affects several parts of the body and development. The diagnosis is normally confirmed through a genetic test arranged by a paediatrician or geneticist. Each condition has its own pattern, and within each condition every child is still an individual with their own personality and pace.

Down syndrome

Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. Children often have low muscle tone, delayed milestones, some degree of intellectual disability and characteristic facial features. Some also have heart, thyroid, hearing, vision or digestive concerns that need regular medical check-ups. With steady support, children with Down syndrome keep learning new skills through childhood and beyond.

Rett syndrome

Rett syndrome mostly affects girls and is usually linked to changes in the MECP2 gene. A baby may seem to develop typically at first and then, often between 6 and 18 months of age, begins to lose skills such as purposeful hand use and speech. Repetitive hand movements like wringing or clapping, irregular breathing, and difficulties with walking, sleep and seizures are common.

Angelman syndrome

Angelman syndrome is linked to a change affecting the UBE3A gene on chromosome 15. Children usually have severe speech delay, with few or no words, along with balance and movement difficulties, seizures, sleep problems and an often happy, excitable manner with frequent laughing and smiling.

How homeopathic support at Samvedna fits in

We want to be clear: homeopathy cannot change a child's genes, and it does not replace the medical care these conditions need. Families come to Samvedna for support with the everyday concerns that affect the child's comfort and progress, such as sleep, irritability, constipation and digestion, frequent colds, restlessness, attention and readiness to learn.

Dr. Krunal Kosada takes a detailed history of the child's health, development, behaviour and family background, and chooses the homeopathic plan for your child as an individual. Every child responds differently. Follow-ups review what has changed at home and in reports from your child's other doctors and therapists, and the plan is adjusted over time.

Please continue all prescribed medicines, including seizure, thyroid and heart medicines, and keep up the regular check-ups advised by your paediatrician, cardiologist, neurologist or geneticist. Never stop prescribed medicine without the treating doctor.

Follow-ups for children with genetic conditions in Surat

Children with Down syndrome, Rett syndrome and Angelman syndrome are usually supported by a team that may include a paediatrician, neurologist, physiotherapist, other therapists and a special educator. Homeopathic care at Samvedna is planned to sit alongside that team. At each follow-up, the doctor looks at:

  • Sleep, appetite, constipation and how often your child falls ill
  • Irritability, restlessness, attention and mood
  • New skills in communication, hand use, movement and play, however small
  • Reports and advice from your child's other doctors and therapists
  • How daily routines for sleep, meals and play are working for your child and the family

Physiotherapy, other therapies, special education and medical follow-ups should continue with your existing team, and we are glad to work alongside them.

Regular health checks to keep up

Children with genetic conditions often need regular medical reviews, and these remain important alongside homeopathic care. Depending on the condition, your doctors may advise periodic checks of:

  • Heart, especially for children with Down syndrome
  • Thyroid function, hearing and vision
  • Growth, weight, feeding and constipation
  • Seizures, sleep and breathing, especially in Rett syndrome and Angelman syndrome
  • Spine and posture as the child grows

Keep all reports in one file and bring it to each follow-up, so the full picture is always in front of the doctor.

Caring for the carers

Learning that your child has a lifelong genetic condition is hard, and many parents feel worried, tired or alone. Consultations at Samvedna give you time to ask questions, understand the road ahead and plan one step at a time. Brothers, sisters and grandparents often have questions too, and it helps when the whole family understands the child's needs.

The first consultation in Surat or online

Please bring the genetic test report, discharge summaries, specialist reports, therapy notes, the list of current medicines and short videos of your child at home. The visit starts with a parent intake and detailed case-taking, followed by a personalised plan with medicine instructions, guidance and a follow-up schedule.

Families outside Surat can begin with an online consultation, and medicines are dispatched to them. Care plans are listed on the fees page.

When to seek help early

Support can begin as soon as a diagnosis is made, even in the first months of life. Early support and steady routines give a child more time to build skills, and early parent guidance helps families feel less alone during a difficult time.

If a child with a genetic condition has a seizure that does not stop, difficulty breathing or a sudden change in alertness, seek emergency medical care straight away. You can read more about seizures and cerebral palsy on our neurological disorders page, about late milestones on our developmental delay page, and about communication on our speech delay page.
