DIFFERENCE IN AUTISTIC MELTDOWNS, SHUTDOWNS AND BURNOUTS IN CHILDREN.
• What they all have in common:
Autistic meltdowns, Shutdowns & burnout are physiological & emotional responses that the brain uses to protect itself.
• So how are they different ??
1. A Meltdown is:- When the environment/surroundings become too overwhelming for your child leading to an extreme Sensory overload. The need to escape increases leading to a loss of self-control. Signs are visible.
2. A Shutdown is: Suppressed emotions & reactions which have not been dealt with. Dissociation, retreat & withdrawal may occur within your child. Meltdowns can turn into shutdowns. Signs may not be visible.
3. A Burnout is: Build up of stress; compound effect of unexpected changes. Trying to mask/fit in. This causes extreme fatigue and exhaustion. Signs may be hidden or visible. Can last a few days or even months at a time.
• Signs to look out for in a:
MELTDOWN
- Increase in stimming
- Increase in aggression
- Irritability
- Repetitive questioning
SHUTDOWN
- Unable to communicate
- ‘Frozen’ state
- Lethargic (constantly trying to lie down)
BURNOUT
- Frequent meltdowns
- Loss of skills
- Extreme exhaustion
- Overstimulated more frequently than usual
An autistic meltdown, shutdown, or burnout in children are commonly misinterpreted. Knowing the difference between the three and the signs to look out for can help immensely in knowing what coping mechanisms to provide for your child in each scenario.
